If one can't access merely increasing the exposure on a raw image then how are these developers expecting anyone to recommend this app?

Pixelmator Classic is no longer available to buy on the Mac App Store but if you have bought it already then you can update it in the Purchased tab.
I have macOS 10.13 so the latest version for me is 3.9.2.
